COPSIN: Providing An Essential Support For Team Canada Athletes For Paris 2024
25 July, 2024

Halifax, NS - July 25, 2024 – A key partner of Team Canada 2024, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN) supports 90 percent of the athletes from the Canadian team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. With five institutes and two centres covering every region of the country, COPSIN provides invaluable sport science, sport medicine, and pathway support to 283 of the 315 athletes in the Canadian squad both on and off the field of play.

Of the 283 athletes supported by COPSIN, half (142) receive services from more than one member of the Network, illustrating the synergy and alignment of the expertise available. This collaborative approach allows members of the Network to maximize resources and offer customized support, responding to the specific needs of each athlete.

COPSIN’s contribution in supporting Team Canada athletes for the Paris 2024 Games reflects its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence. By providing world-class performance services and conducting applied sport science research projects, COPSIN makes a significant contribution to Canada’s performance goals on the international sport stage.

“We are very proud of the largest ever contingent of athletes from Atlantic Canada to represent our country at the Olympics in Paris.”  Commented Ken Bagnell, CEO of the Canadian Sport institute Atlantic

Along with the athletes, there are seven head and assistant coaches guiding different Team Canada.

“Many of these athletes represented their respective provinces at recent Canada Summer Games and provide proof that athletes from the region can be developed to be some of the best in the world.  Several athletes also have legitimate medal opportunities in Paris.”

42 COPSIN Experts on the Front Line

The commitment of COPSIN members does not stop at preparing athletes for the Games. A total of 42 Network experts will be on the front line to provide direct support and follow-up during the Games. Of these, 13 will be part of the Canadian Olympic Committee mission staff, while 29 are providing services to specific sports. This field support ensures that Team Canada athletes benefit from state-of-the-art technical and scientific knowledge throughout their stay in the “Ville Lumière”.

A Long-Term Commitment to Athlete Development

COPSIN serves as a home base for Canadian athletes, providing consistent support throughout their long-term development pathways. Many athletes have been part of the COPSIN for years, benefiting from tailored services and expertise well before Paris 2024. This deep, ongoing engagement underscores COPSIN’s crucial role in nurturing talent and preparing athletes for peak performance on the global stage.

A Strategic Partnership for Performance

COPSIN plays a key role in Canada’s high-performance sport system. By working closely with National Sport Organizations, Network members ensure a cohesive, integrated approach to athlete development and the promotion of sporting excellence in Canada.
