Grounded in holistic individualism, enjoyment and simplicity, CSI Atlantic’s newest Strength and Conditioning Coach Gary Pepperell’s three pillared approach and specialized skill set brings a fresh perspective and adds value to the coaching staff.

As the lifestyle on the East Coast appealed to Pepperell, he knew he wanted to live in Atlantic Canada. After being selected as the successful candidate for his role at CSI Atlantic, Pepperell made the trip across the Atlantic Ocean from England to take on a new journey in his career, and a new chapter in his life. “Life is too short to wait,” says Pepperell.

Arriving in Fredericton, N.B. on January 9 and starting at CSI Atlantic the next day, it was a natural fit for Pepperell who has both a bachelor of strength and conditioning degree and a master’s degree in sport and exercise science research from the University of Gloucestershire.

With his comprehensive knowledge of strength and conditioning, Pepperell is already making an impact at CSI Atlantic. Working with 2023 Canada Games gold and bronze medalist, gymnast Dexter Richard. “[Pepperell] puts a lot of thought and effort into his programs”, says Richard, “Gary is very focused on the athletes he is working with.”

Along with Pepperell’s vast expertise, his adaptability stands out. “What sets Gary apart is definitely his wide variety and knowledge of different exercises–it was especially evident during recovery of my ankle, he has unique yet effective exercises that add variety to my programs,” says Richard.

Pepperell has a laid back approach to life that he says influences his coaching style. “I like to say I’m pretty stoic—what comes, comes and what goes, goes.” His calming presence gets the best out of his athletes and creates a welcoming environment for his athletes to voice their opinions and concerns. “I admire his communication skills, he works very well with [the athletes] and maintains a great relationship with them,” says Richard.

While working with some of the top high performance talents in New Brunswick, Pepperell looks to reach both his and his athletes goals. “Success for me looks like winning through collaboration and continual learning,” says Pepperell. As he trains the University of New Brunswick’s swimming athletes, volleyball and basketball teams, Pepperell wants to help push his athletes to take home medals at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) level and reach the AUS finals during the teams’ postseason play.

As Pepperell’s stoic presence and specialized skill set  has already made an impact on the East Coast, his fresh perspective and encompassing three pillared approach will continue to guide him and his athletes closer to their goals at CSI Atlantic.
