The goal of the Black and Indigenous Coach Mentorship program is to provide an inclusive and supportive learning environment for new and aspiring coaches to build confidence and competence and become valued leaders in their communities and throughout the provincial sport system." - Mark Smith, former Director of Sport, Sport Nova Scotia
The Black and Indigenous Coaching Mentorship program began in collaboration with Sport Nova Scotia, Canadian Sport Institute Atlantic and the Mi’kmaq Sport Council of Nova Scotia. The program is a two-year project aimed at recruiting and supporting Black and Indigenous coaches. The program will include face to face workshops and virtual sessions, one-on-one guidance and support from experienced coaches and those accepted will also receive National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) training.
The Black and Indigenous Coach Mentorship program is free. There is an application and interview process to identify prospective mentees. The program is open to any coach who identifies as a member of the Black and/or Indigenous community. This includes new and experienced coaches who are seeking an opportunity to further develop coaching knowledge, skills and expertise. Selected coaches are required to participate in the program for the full two-year duration.

“Because you don't know what you don't know and I found this program gave me a lot of new ideas and made me look at coaching in a different perspective” -Duan Ash, mentee
“Any safe space to be yourself and participate without judgment creates the best professional and personal development opportunities. The BICMP is designed, thanks to Mark and Ann, to be just that...a safe space to learn and grow. The opportunity to network with other coaches is the best professional development and so this is another reason why I would recommend this program.” - Catharine Burton, mentor
